What is cold email outreach?
Last updated:
Definition
Cold email: Unsolicited outbound email to prospects who haven't opted in, sent for B2B sales, recruiting or partnership purposes. Legal in many jurisdictions under specific conditions; ineffective without deliverability infrastructure.
Effective cold email requires sender-side fundamentals (warmed domain, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, custom tracking domain) plus content-side work (tight ICP, signal-based personalization, multichannel pairing with LinkedIn). Legal requirements differ by country; see the GDPR and CAN-SPAM entries in this glossary.
Is cold email outreach legal?
In many places, yes, under conditions. In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act covers business-to-business email with no exception and requires an accurate sender, a physical postal address and opt-outs honoured within 10 business days. In the UK, PECR lets you email corporate bodies without consent but treats sole traders as individuals. This is not legal advice.
- US (FTC guidance): identify the message as an ad where required, don't use deceptive subject lines, include a valid physical postal address, and honour opt-outs within 10 business days.
- UK (ICO guidance on PECR): you can email any corporate body, but sole traders and some partnerships need consent; don't conceal your identity, include a valid address for opting out, and keep a do-not-email list.
- EU: B2B outreach usually relies on legitimate interest under GDPR, plus each country's e-privacy rules. See GDPR (cold B2B outreach) in the glossary.
What do you need to set up before sending cold email?
Authenticate your sending domain with SPF or DKIM, add DMARC, use TLS, and make sure sending domains have valid forward and reverse DNS. Gmail requires these of all senders, adds DMARC and one-click unsubscribe for bulk senders above 5,000 messages a day, and expects spam rates under 0.3%.
Most teams also send from a separate domain or subdomain, warm up new mailboxes gradually, and cap daily volume per mailbox so one campaign can't damage the main domain's reputation.
What makes a cold email work?
Relevance beats cleverness. Send to a narrow list where you can say in one line why this person, why now. Keep it short, make one specific ask, and follow up a few times with something new each time. Stop as soon as someone replies or opts out, on every channel you use.
How does cold email work with LinkedIn outreach?
The two channels cover each other's gaps. Some buyers rarely check email; others ignore LinkedIn invitations. A multichannel sequence invites on LinkedIn, follows up there after acceptance, and switches to email for people who don't accept, using an enriched work address. Replies on either channel stop the whole sequence.
In LinkedCamp, email steps are available on Pro (50,000 emails a month) and Agency (100,000 a month), in the same sequence as LinkedIn steps.

- Email deliverability
- The share of sent emails that actually reach the recipient's inbox (vs. spam folder, blocked, or bounced).
